Lucky, style #4040, was first introduced in late 1994. When she first arrived, she had only seven black felt spots which were glued on her red back. The spots were 9mm in diameter. Lucky with the glued on spots came with either the second generation TY tag with the smaller TY lettering and later with the third generation TY tag with the later TY lettering. All the original ladybugs had the white body tag with the black ink and some third generation TY tags do have the red ink. I have never seen a fourth generation TY tag (with the poem and birth date) on this original lady.
In the summer of 1996, Lucky underwent a decorative metamorphose. She now had 9mm black spots on her back which were part of the fabric and not glued on the fabric. She, like the other Beanies produced, had the current fourth generation poem tag. The spots are not 7 but are approximately 11. In mid 1997 Lucky started appearing with 9 perfect spots!!! Be sure and check out the spots on Lucky!!!!
The major problem with the glued on spots is obvious. They would become unglued and Lucky became unlucky! I am sure this was the reason for the fabric change. I caution all collectors to be sure the original lady has 7 spots.
For
reasons known only by the Beanie Company, Lucky's fabric changed again in
late 1996. When collectors started calling me with the news they had seen
or purchased a Lucky with approximately 21 smaller (6mm) spots on her
back, I was taken totally by surprise. Why? Naturally, I purchased several
of both varieties of Lucky the cute Ladybug. In November, 1997 the 21
spotted Lucky is selling for $300.00-$400.00 !! I personally do not like
the 6mm spotted fabric because the round spots are ruined with the seam in
the middle of her back. Well, Lucky joins the short list of only three
other Beanies to have three style changes. The other Beanies currently
are: Tank, Nip and Zip.
